Where is Charity Island?

When we got a call for a family session on Charity Island, my husband and I were really excited because we had never been there before. Charity Island is located between Augres, MI and Port Austin on Lake Huron.

Charity Island is a 222 acre island. 90% of the Island is managed by Federal Fish & Wildlife Service as Wildlife Sanctuary. Many people visit to see the wildlife and lighthouse located there.

Situated on the northern tip of Big Charity Island, the Lighthouse and its keepers' quarters stand out among the dense forest. This island boasts a remarkable shoreline stretching over three miles, all nestled in the heart of the expansive Saginaw Bay, which spans a breathtaking twenty miles in width. The water is crystal clear and very inviting on a hot day. We loved walking the beach and looking at all the unique rocks on the shoreline.

Rent Charity Island

In the summer, the Island is rented out as a vacation rental. If you are planning a wedding and would like a unique venue, here is some information about renting the light keeper's house as a wedding venue.

Charity Island has a rich maritime history that envelopes this privately owned home. Outside in the yard, you'll discover captivating history Kiosks that tell the remarkable stories and cherished moments of the lighthouse's past service.

Charity Island gift shop

There is a quaint little gift shop on the premises.

The light keeper's house is equipped with both solar panels and a wind turbine, ensuring a reliable power supply even with a backup generator. By performing a Google search on Big Charity Island, you can effortlessly access a zoomed-in view of the property. The light keeper's residence is mistakenly referred to as Charity Island Lodge. The lodge is, in fact, a charming chalet with two bedrooms, nestled just one mile along the beautiful shoreline. It's worth noting that this hidden gem, unfortunately, goes unnoticed on the Google Map of the island.

You can watch videos of the island here. There used to be a dinner cruise to the island before the Covid-19 outbreak.

The Wiltse Family Session

The weather was beautiful and warm the day we went over for the family session! The Wiltse Family owns the Lightkeeper's House and land around it. Three generations of Wiltse's were on the  Island for the weekend. It was an amazing ride over to the island on the boat and back to Augres at sunset.
