7 Tips for Preparing for Your Fall Session
Fall is a really popular time for family photo sessions. After all, the trees have so many vibrant colors, plus you get a chance to wear all your warm and cozy clothes! Here are some tips to keep in mind when preparing for your fall session.
Fall Accessories
1. Pull out all your accessories and clothes that bring out the "fall" feeling. For example, leather boots, scarves and comfy sweaters look great on the whole family and can really make a picture pop. Tip: neutrals (browns & tans) do really well in the fall against all that foliage. But, even greens and reds and oranges can look great.
2. Timing is everything. Once the leaves start changing, call up your photographer and book a session. I love fall sessions, so chances are I've got a session available for your family. Check out Michigan's fall color chart.
Locations and Backgrounds
3. If it's autumn, you and your family will love a session outside in the gorgeous fall weather. I have a lot of locations to choose from that have very pretty backdrops. I'm also open to your suggestions, if you have a special place that you think would be beautiful.
Best Time of Day for Fall Sessions
4. Try to plan for a mid-afternoon to early-evening session, when the sun is just starting to go down. The days are shorter in the fall, so we need to plan accordingly to get that golden hour light.
5. Chances are there are leaves on the ground or still some color on the trees. I may have you throw leaves up into the air or walk with your family with the color behind you. Remember, this shoot is all about capturing your family and having fun, so just plan on spending quality time with everyone.
Essentials to Bring Along
6. It can get chilly in autumn, so you may want to bring some essential things with you. I recommend a lip balm, moisturizer, tissues for those cold noses, and, of course, warm clothing, maybe even a blanket that matches your overall colors.
Comfortable Shoes and Clothing
7. Wear comfortable shoes since we're going to be outside, we'll probably do lots of walking. If those boots look amazing, but kill your feet, ditch them. If the scarf looks adorable on little Sally, but it itches her face and makes her unhappy, it's better to leave it off.
