Now MidMichigan Hospital in West Branch has a maternity ward that can include the services of a Doula.
"Doulas are the bridge between medical care and emotional support, providing a continuous presence that nurtures and empowers women during one of the most profound experiences of their lives." Do you need to hire a doula?
What is a Doula?
About 26 years ago, when I had my second child, I used a midwife. That was such a wonderful birthing experience, compared to the birth of my first child. My midwife stayed with me the whole labor, and she coached me through it all, helping me to relax as much as possible. But there wasn't really any help with breastfeeding or the adjustment to a new baby after birth. I was always worried something was wrong! If I had someone there to say that everything was normal, it would have taken a load off my mind!
I had never heard of the word "Doula", until about 3 years ago, when my niece had her first baby. I didn't fully understand what a Doula did. But now that I know a little more about it, I wish I would have had the opportunity to benefit from one.
The Safe Haven Doula, LLC had a ribbon cutting at Highway Brewing Co. on November 30, 2023.
Rachele Macera is the birth & postpartum Doula, lactation counselor, and childbirth educator.
So what is a Doula? A Doula is a companion who supports a birthing person during labor and birth. Birth Doulas are trained to provide continuous, one-on-one care. She also provides information, physical support and emotional support to birthing persons and their partners.
Why Enlist the Help of a Doula?
Trials have been done that tested the effects of continuous labor support. People who receive continuous support are more likely to have a normal vaginal birth, and less likely to have pain medication, negative feelings about childbirth, and Caesareans. Also, their labors are shorter. Their babies are less likely to have complications at birth or be admitted to a NICU.

As a photographer, I don't do birth photography. It is exhausting to be available at all hours! But I love doing Maternity and Newborn photography. Here are a few examples of my newborn images.
