Have you ever wondered what colors go well together, planning for your family portrait session? Some have no idea how to dress for a session, and I'm here to help you out with some examples. Here's how to coordinate your clothing colors for your family portrait session.
First, it is best to keep your colors to under 2 or 3 different colors. Too many colors make the image look too busy. Some like to add something white, which can work well.
Second, it depends on the season of your family session. If it is spring-time, pastels can look nice. If your session is taking place in the fall, reds, browns, tans, yellows and greens look good.
Third, think about where you will be hanging your wall art. Try to coordinate with your wall color.
How To Find the Right Clothing Colors For Your Family
I recommend going through Dad's color options first and working around him. Moms and kids usually have things in just about every color. On the other hand, Dad may not have a lot of variety of colors in his wardrobe. He may have color preferences that he wears on a daily basis.
In the preparing and planning stages, lay all the different clothing options out on the bed. This will help you see them as a cohesive group.
Your clothing options really make a big difference in your family photo. Take a look at some of the color palettes from my previous sessions.

As a last thought, large patterns are best left out of your family clothing choices. We want the eye to focus on your faces, not your clothes.
